LABELING YOUR PRODUCTS
Labels
We do not provide labels, design services, or labeling services. Each customer has their own vision of their designs and logos. While we are experts at creating and manufacturing cosmetic products, we do not have a design department.
These days, it is really easy to design and print your own label at home. Alternatively, there are many companies online who print short runs of labels.
One online source to design and print labels at home is Online Labels. They have many shapes, sizes, and types of materials including a nice weatherproof material which is ideal for cosmetics. Their online design software, Maestro Designer, is very easy to use and lets you print right at home on your laser or inkjet printer.
If you want to purchase smaller quantities of labels on rolls, you can google "short run labels" and it will come up with a lot of label companies.
If you are purchasing larger quantities of products from us and want to purchase a label applicator, there are several simple label applicators available to put labels from a roll onto a bottle or jar. You might want to check out www.easylabeler.com or www.zaplabeler.com.
What size labels should I use?
Below are the MAXIMUM dimensions of the labels for our current packaging. Packaging dimensions may vary depending on the supply availability. We will try to update this information as things change but we are not responsible for any changes. You don't have to use labels as large as this but you can't go any larger. A good tip to know is that the larger/longer the label, the harder it is to put on straight if you are putting them on by hand. We suggest if you are putting a wrap around label on a 4 oz or 8 oz jar, that you use 2 shorter labels instead of one long label.
2 oz jar - white or black jar with white or black cap:
Side label: 1.125" high x 7.125 " wide
Top & Bottom label: 2" diameter for top, 1.25" diameter for bottom
4 oz black low profile jar with black cap:
Side label: 1 3/8" high x 9" wide
Top & Bottom label: 2 1/2" diameter for top, 1 1/2" diameter for bottom
4 oz white round bottom jar with black cap:
Side label: 1" high x 9" wide
Top & Bottom label: 2 1/2" diameter for top, 1 1/8" diameter for bottom
8 oz black low profile jar with black cap:

What do I have to put on my label?
The Food & Drug Administration regulates what is required on cosmetic labels. You can read their requirements here.
Minimum Requirements for label
1. Front Panel (front of bottle, top or side of jar): Product name and net contents. Net contents need to be in both US and Metric
Examples:
For products that flow such as shampoos use fluid ounces: 4 fl. oz (118 ml) Metric Calculation: 29.57 times # of ounces in bottle
For products that don't flow such as body creams use weight ounces: 4 oz (113 gms) Metric Calculation: 28.35 times # of ounces in jar
2. Back Panel (back of bottle, back or bottom of jar): Product description, directions for use, full product ingredient list (see each individual product page), and your full business name & street address.
Product Claims - What you CAN'T say on your label or in your advertising/website
Please note that My Own Hair Bath Body is not responsible for any legal or regulatory issues with your labels or marketing materials. The following are some wordings which are not permitted on cosmetic products. While My Own Hair Bath Body attempts to provide you with basic labeling information, we are not regulatory or legal experts and do not warrant the authenticity or reliability of such information.
Cosmetics are regulated by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration). Cosmetic products may only claim to change the appearance of hair or skin. Cosmetic products may not make any claims to treat or prevent any issues, illnesses, or health conditions.
Drug Claims:
The following are examples of some types of drug claims and may not be made on cosmetic products.
Hair growth, anti-hair loss, skin protection, chaffing, chapping, anti-redness, anti-itching, anti-lice, sun/UV protection, SPF, heals, cures nor may you say "helps" heal, cure, etc.
Made in USA Claims:
Even though we manufacture our products in California, a "Made in USA" claim is not permitted. A "Made in USA" claim not only means that the product is manufactured in the USA but all materials must come from the USA. Since we use a lot of wonderful, exotic materials in our products which come from other countries (e.g. shea butter, argan oil, coconut oil, etc.), this claim will not work on our products. You can find out more here.
Organic Claims:
The US NOP (National Organics Program) has very specific rules for making organic claims. My Own Hair Bath Body products are not considered "Organic" or "Made with Organic Ingredients" unless specifically stated in the information for each product. These claims should not be made on your product labels. However, My Own does use some certified organic ingredients (see full product ingredient lists) and you may put the word "organic" in front of the material name in your back panel ingredient list as indicated in the ingredient lists on each product page. You can find out more information about organic claims here.
Vegan Claims:
Most of our base products don't contain any animal ingredients (most noted exception is our Clay Paste), but we do manufacture them in a facility that uses animal based ingredients and there are a couple of "goodies" which are animal based. Hence, we do not guarantee and do not certify that our products are "vegan".
Gluten Free Claims:
Our base products are made with ingredients which should not contain gluten. However, we cannot guarantee that the products will be "gluten free" because the manufacturers of the raw materials that we use and indeed, we ourselves, use production equipment for products which do contain gluten and while we do have validated pot cleaning procedures, they do not test for gluten.
Chemical Free Claims:
Since everything in the universe is made from chemicals (including water), you cannot make a “chemical free” claim. If you wish to make reference to specific chemicals like sulfates, or parabens or synthetic fragrances, that is OK, assuming that we tell you that that is true.
Cruelty Free Claims:
We do not test our products on animals. However, there is not specific definition for cruelty free. It is better to say that the products have not been tested on animals. We do not belong to any of the organizations which use “cruelty free” verbiage. However, we know of no legal restriction to use the “Cruelty free” phrase.
Other Claims:
There are many other types of claims that require clinical testing and substantiation before they can be made on a cosmetic product. These include, but are not limited to, hypo-allergenic, non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-sensitizing, non-irritating, no more tears, etc.
